Lancashire and Yorkshire declare war… on cigarette litter. Over the last few weeks two major BUTTsOUT campaigns have been run by the councils in Rochdale and Leeds.... our March newsletter is dedicated to these two campaigns. ROCHDALE Rochdale MBC handed out BUTTsOUT Ashtrays as part of a campaign to highlight to smokers that littering in public places is unacceptable and against the law. To supplement the distribution of BUTTsOUT ashtrays at the launch, the council set up a telephone hotline for smokers to obtain a free ashtray. This approach has been so successful we have already printed and shipped another consignment of ashtrays. Visit www.rochdale.gov.uk BUTT out... Councillor Jacqui Boswick, Mayor of Rochadale Councillor Sultan Ali and 10-year-olds Derren Dykes and Chloe Carter help Mr ButtsOut and the No Butts bus get across the anti-smoking message.   Throughout March, bus shelters and the backs of buses will publicise the councils BUTTsOUT campaign. LEEDS On the 16th March Leeds City Council took to the streets to draw attention to the problem of cigarette litter. The launch was covered by local newspapers and Yorkshire TV It is estimated that around 1,000,000 cigarette butts a day are littered in Leeds and BUTTsOUT Personal Ashtrays are being used to complement the councils existing Streetscene initiative. Within 48 hours of the launch the council placed an order for more ashtrays, which certainly makes Leeds the largest ever cigarette litter campaign in Europe…. and probably anywhere in the world apart from Australia.
