BUTTsOUT UK designs innovative campaigns to assist Councils

As indoor smoking bans become more common across the UK, BUTTsOUT UK has conducted successful campaigns with the theme “only smokers can stop cigarette butt litter” in collaboration with pro-active councils such as: Colchester, Preston, Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham, Dublin, Limerick, Rochdale, Gedling, Croydon, Darlington, Westmeath, Oldham, Rotherham, Stirling, Dun Laoghaire, Falkirk, York, Slough, Guildford, Basingstoke, Bracknell Forest, North Cornwall, Islington, Woking, Swindon, and Braintree. See below for more details

BUTTsOUT also supports SAS and The Marine Conservation Society in their campaigns to clean up the beaches around the UK

Breaking news …

Preston Council (UK) has cleaned up at the Green Oscars winning Best Practice Category for it’s very cheeky BUTTsOUT campaign. They reduced butt litter by 67% and maintain over 60% reduction 12 months later.

As concern about the impact of cigarette butt litter increases in the UK, fines and stories about smokers being caught littering are becoming more prevalent, and more and more areas are taking action. Read about some of them in our newsletters

Based on the principle that “only smokers can stop cigarette butt litter”, BUTTsOUT has conducted successful campaigns already in collaboration with the following councils:

ENGLAND

Leeds – As part of their “Streetscene” campaign the council launched a major initiative to tackle the problem of over 1,000,000 cigarette butts being littered every day on the streets of “England’s favourite city”. You can see some of the publicity and educational campaign material here and read about the campaign in more detail on the Leeds Council website

Rochdale has mounted an extensive and impressive bus and bus shelter advertising campaign to inform smokers about cigarette litter and their BUTTsOUT initiative. Click here to read the story on the Borough of Rochdale website

Gedling decided to take on the problem, and although only a small council their campaign attracted extensive media coverage from local press and on the BBC

Woking promoted the BUTTsOUT solution to smokers, local businesses and retailers. We are heartened that 15 months after the campaign we still receive a steady flow of visitors via the BUTTsOUT link on the council website

Colchester saw our first links with a football club who recognised that the smoking ban in their stadium had possibly increased the problem of cigarette litter in the surrounding streets

Croydon: A campaign that started with council litter wardens handing out BUTTsOUT personal ashtrays rather than fines, has now developed to a point where the council are actively encouraging local retailers to stock personal ashtrays.

Darlington: A small campaign, but run by a council that is being very proactive in finding new ways to tackle litter.

EIRE

Dublin City Council launched the largest ever European cigarette butt litter campaign with our help. Our first campaign in the Republic, it attracted extensive coverage from national TV, Radio and Press. BUTTsOUT ashtrays are now on sale at selected retailers in the city.

Limerick successfully brought cigarette butt litter to the attention of smokers and non-smokers, and are now actively promoting our No Butts Outside Buildings (NoBOBs) campaigns to local businesses

West Meath: A cigarette litter campaign in collaboration with Environet Ireland.
